Apex Jungle – Pool Equipment Guide Cape Town

All You Need to Know About Swimming Pool Equipment and Functionality

A practical Cape Town guide to the systems that keep your pool clean, safe and running — from pumps and filters to chlorinators, heating and automation

Understanding swimming pool equipment helps homeowners across Greater Cape Town — from Hout Bay and Noordhoek to Constantia, Sea Point and the Southern Suburbs — spot problems early and choose the right service. This guide from Apex Jungle explains how each major component works.

🔀
Multiport valve · Filter control hub

Multiport valve

The multiport valve sits on top of (or beside) the sand filter and directs water flow for different jobs. It is one of the most handled parts of a Cape Town pool system.

Common settings

  • Filter — normal filtration; water goes through the sand and back to the pool
  • Backwash — reverses flow to flush dirt to waste
  • Rinse — short flush after backwash before returning to Filter
  • Waste — sends water straight out (lowering level or vacuuming heavy debris)
  • Recirculate — bypasses the sand (useful for mixing chemicals quickly)
  • Closed — blocks flow (never run the pump on Closed)

Functionality tips

Always turn the pump off before moving the multiport handle. Forcing the valve under pressure damages the spider gasket inside — a common cause of sand returning to the pool or weak filtration.

Apex Jungle tip: If you see sand in the pool after backwashing, the multiport gasket or laterals may need attention.

Pool filter · Sand · Cartridge · DE

Pool filter

The filter removes dirt, debris and fine particles so return water is clear. In South African residential pools, sand filters are the most common; cartridge and DE filters are also used.

How it works

The pump pushes water into the filter tank. Dirt is trapped in the media; clean water exits through laterals (sand) or the cartridge core and returns via the multiport and PVC lines.

Signs of trouble

  • Pressure stays high after backwash
  • Cloudy water despite balanced chemicals
  • Short filter cycles or frequent backwashing

Wind and dust in areas like Hout Bay, Kommetjie and the Atlantic Seaboard load filters faster — monitor pressure weekly in peak season.

Filter medium · #20 silica · Glass · Zeolite

Filter medium

Filter medium is the material inside the tank that traps particles. For sand filters, the industry standard is #20 grade silica quartz sand (about 0.45–0.55 mm), which filters down to roughly 20 microns.

Options

  • Silica / quartz #20 — standard, cost-effective, widely available in Cape Town
  • Glass media — finer filtration, often less backwash water
  • Zeolite — fine filtration; higher cost

Replace sand typically every 3–5 years, or sooner after heavy green-pool recoveries. Never use builder’s or play sand.

⚙️
Pool pumps · Circulation heart of the system

Swimming pool pumps

The pump is the heart of the system. It pulls water from the skimmer and main drain, pushes it through the filter, and returns it through the jets.

Key parts

  • Strainer basket — catches leaves before the impeller
  • Impeller — spinning component that creates flow
  • Motor — drives the impeller (single-speed or variable-speed)
  • Mechanical seal — keeps water out of the motor; fails if run dry

Common issues in Cape Town

Priming failures, noisy bearings, air leaks at the lid O-ring, and damage from load-shedding restarts. Apex Jungle recommends proper workshop bench testing for serious motor issues rather than temporary on-site guesses.

💧
Chlorinators · Salt · Inline · Tablet

Chlorinators

Chlorinators automate or simplify sanitiser delivery so bacteria and algae stay under control — critical in warm Cape Town summers and after windy debris days.

Main types

  • Salt chlorinator (SWG) — converts salt to chlorine; cell needs periodic cleaning
  • Inline / off-line tablet feeders — dissolve chlorine tablets into the return line
  • Floating dispensers — simple but less precise

Salt systems still need correct stabiliser (cyanuric acid), pH control and occasional manual shock. A dirty salt cell is a frequent reason chlorine output drops.

🧪
Pool chemicals · Balance · Sanitise · Clarity

Swimming pool chemicals

Chemicals keep water safe and protect equipment and surfaces (Marbelite, fibreglass, tiles).

Core group

  • Sanitiser — chlorine or bromine to kill pathogens and algae
  • pH adjusters — acid or soda ash to hold pH about 7.2–7.6
  • Alkalinity — buffers pH swings
  • Stabiliser (CYA) — protects chlorine from UV
  • Algaecides / clarifiers — support when needed
  • Shock — oxidises waste after heavy use or green recovery

Test regularly. Coastal and high-sun areas (Camps Bay, Sea Point, Scarborough, Muizenberg) often need closer attention to stabiliser and chlorine demand.

🔒
Shut off valves · Isolation & safety

Shut off valve

Shut-off (isolation) valves let you stop flow to the pump, filter, solar heater or individual suction lines without draining the whole pool.

Why they matter

  • Safe pump or filter removal for repair
  • Isolating a leaking section of PVC
  • Controlling skimmer vs main-drain suction

A valve left partly closed is a common reason for weak flow or a pump that will not prime. After winterising or repairs, confirm all suction and return valves are fully open before starting the pump.

🔧
PVC piping · Suction & return lines

PVC piping

Rigid PVC carries water between the pool, pump, filter and returns. Suction lines run under negative pressure; return lines are under positive pressure.

Common problems

  • Cracks or failed glued joints causing suction air leaks
  • Underground breaks that show up as water loss
  • Incorrect pipe size restricting flow
  • Age-related brittleness in older Cape Town installations

Air bubbles in the pump basket often point to a suction-side PVC or union leak. Persistent water loss may need professional leak detection.

🌊
Skimmer box & weir · Surface cleaning

Skimmer box / weir

The skimmer draws in surface water where oil, leaves and dust collect. The floating weir flap helps create a strong surface skimming action.

Functionality

  • Keep water at mid-skimmer level
  • Empty the basket often — especially after South-Easter wind events
  • Ensure the weir moves freely (a stuck weir reduces suction)

Blocked skimmers are one of the fastest ways to starve the pump of water. In leafy suburbs such as Constantia, Tokai, Newlands and Bishopscourt, check baskets more often in autumn.

☀️
Pool heating · Solar · Heat pump · Gas

Pool heating systems

Heating extends the swim season through Cape Town’s cooler months.

Main options

  • Solar — panels on the roof; low running cost; depends on sun and roof space
  • Heat pump — efficient electric heating; popular for year-round comfort
  • Gas heater — fast heat-up; higher running cost

Solar systems need correct flow and non-return valves. Heat pumps need clear airflow and correctly sized contactors on the pool DB board. Bypass valves allow filtration without heating when not required.

Pool DB board · Power & protection

Swimming pool distribution board

The pool distribution board (DB) supplies and protects the pump, chlorinator, lights, heat pump and automation. It should include correct breakers, earth leakage protection where required, and tidy, labelled circuits.

Why it matters

  • Safe isolation for servicing
  • Prevention of nuisance trips or burned contactors
  • Proper supply for variable-speed pumps and heaters

Corrosion near the coast (Sea Point, Camps Bay, Bantry Bay, Kommetjie, Scarborough) can attack terminals. Apex Jungle handles pool-related electrical maintenance as part of complete outdoor care.

Only qualified persons should open or modify the DB board. Lock out power before any pump work.

📱
Pool automation · Timers · Smart control

Swimming pool automation

Automation runs the pump, heater, lights and sometimes chemistry on a schedule — reducing manual work and stabilising water quality.

Typical components

  • Timer or digital controller for pump hours
  • Smart systems controllable by app
  • Interlocks so heaters only run when flow is present
  • Optional probes for pH / ORP monitoring

After load-shedding, check that timers have restarted on the correct programme. Variable-speed pumps paired with automation can cut energy use while still turning the pool volume over adequately each day.
